Website Content: Are You Touching The Reader’s Emotions?

Do Your Written Words Connect With Your Readers?

I have an exercise for you to do today. :)

I would like you to go to your website or blog, pick what you think is one of your best articles or pages of content, and then sit back. Read that content out loud to yourself.

In whatever that content is attempting to “do” … meaning are you trying to teach the reader how to do something, or are you trying to sell your service or product, as examples … do you feel that your words are really touching the reader’s emotions? Are you really doing a good job of relating to your reader?

Try to Write the Way You Would Talk to Someone Face-to-Face

You know, you do not have to be a great writer in order to write content that others will enjoy reading. As a matter of fact, if you can write the way you would carry on a conversation with your visitor sitting across from you, then chances are your unique way of communicating will cause a “connectedness” with your reader to take place! Meaning … they’ll gladly listen to what you have to say!

I think many people are too stiff when they write. Many people just don’t let their personalities come through in their web content. Just like someone can turn you off with the tone of their voice during a lecture (it becomes hard for you to keep focused on what they are saying – you’d rather get the heck out of the room!), a rather “bland” and impersonal writing style can be a turn-off to your site’s visitors, too.

Always try to make sure that your written words really touch the reader in a friendly way, with as much of a personal spin as you can give to those words. I try my darndest in everything I write to let “Claudia” come through. I usually have a rather lighthearted approach in the way I talk with people, and it can be said that I am “full of expression”, too. (You could not accuse me of being low-key!)

So, I try to impart these aspects of myself when I write, as I’ve found that people really do relate much better to what I have to say if I try to stick to being “me”. To be honest, I have to restrain myself from using smileys all over the place when I write! :-P Like I said, I am a rather demonstrative person when I talk. I make a lot of hand gestures, too … I think I learned that from my father. :)

Anyway, I do believe you’ll really reap the benefits if you write in a natural style, letting your “self” shine through. Your readers will understand and relate much better to whatever it is you are trying to get across to them.

Something as simple as improving the “tone of voice” in your website content can make a big improvement in the most wanted action you desire from your visitors!

    Hi!

You do have a great style very down to earth, simple and clear. I like that. I am redoing my about us page to try and decrease my bounce rate. I am going to incorporate some of the things you spoke about on your website.
    Thanks.

    Regards,
    Katy
